Blue River Church of the Brethren

Our Ministers

Blue River has three set-apart ministers within our fellowship.

Our Pastor since 1990 is Bro. Craig Alan Myers. He and his wife Laura have four children, whom they educate at home. He is a graduate of The Pennsylvania State University and Ashland Theological Seminary. He also received ministry training through the training program of the Western Pennsylvania District. Bro. Myers is chairman of the Brethren Revival Fellowship and president of the Whitley County Ministerial Association. He has served on the Northern Indiana District Board, and was chairman of the District Ministry Commission. He is moderator-elect of the Northern Indiana District Conference (moderator in 2010-2011).

Bro. Travis Hartman began service as our Associate Pastor for Youth on January 16, 2008. Licensed to the ministry by Blue River in 2007, he is a graduate of Huntington University with a degree in Bible and religion. He is married to Brittany, and they have a son, Micah.

Mark & Brenda Ray
Bro. Mark A. Ray is in tent-making ministry in Denver, Colorado. Formerly a missionary in Ireland from 2000-2008, he is married to Brenda. Mark served as part-time Youth Director at Blue River from 1995-1997, and as full-time Youth Pastor at Blue River from 1998-2000. He is a graduate of Ashland University, and was ordained to the ministry in the Church of the Brethren in 2000.

A note to our guests

Our guests occasionally comment that they notice something “different” when they visit our worship services.

What are the little “caps” on the ladies’ heads?

These “caps” are called “prayer veilings” or “prayer coverings.”

Our sisters wear them to worship and we teach them based on 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, where the Apostle Paul teaches that Christian women should wear a distinctive covering which symbolizes the creation order and the proper roles of men and women in the church. Until around 1900, most Christian churches observed this practice. Since then, the practice has been maintained primarily by various Anabaptist groups and some Catholic churches.

Our church makes them available to the sisters, and extras are found in a plexiglass box in the foyer.

Why do the sisters wear dresses or skirts?

We seek to apply the Scriptural principles regarding the distinctions between the sexes, as well as Biblical modesty. This is why the church strongly encourages women and girls to wear modest dresses or skirts to all church services. Our church has also taught separation from, and non-conformity to, the world. There ought to be a difference which marks Christian women in worship.
